Hynam

About
The hamlet of Hynam, situated east of Naracoorte, was once a large sheep run. With the arrival of the Border Rail, a small township gradually emerged. At its height, Hynam boasted a hall, a school (opened in 1891), a store, a post office, a blacksmith, and a bustling railway complex.
Today, the stories of Hynam’s pioneering families can be explored at the heritage-listed Hynam Cemetery. The local community is dedicated to preserving and enhancing this historic site, sharing the lives of those buried there with visitors.
Hynam is also home to the heritage-listed Hynam Woolshed, the first stone shearing shed built in the district. Although located on private property and not open to the public, the woolshed can be easily viewed from the road. To learn more about its history, visit the Sheep’s Back Museum.
